Difficulty Getting to Sleep at Night

Most people will have experienced poor sleep at night at some stage in their lives. It’s not uncommon to experience a week of poor sleep and then resume normal sleep. There are various factors that can disrupt our sleep cycle. Usually when the body and mind are able to adjust or the problem has gone, sleep returns back to normal.

However, this is not always the case. Many people of all ages suffer from persistent sleeplessness. Sleep problems can vary; one person may find it to go to sleep at night whereas another might wake frequently during the night. Insomnia is by far the most common sleep condition and it is broken down into three types; transient, intermittent and chronic.

Recognizing the cause of sleeplessness is important in effectively alleviating the problem. Often sleep problem sufferers ignore the cause and try and tackle only the symptoms of insomnia. Over-the-counter sleep aids and prescription sleep medication are used widely. Often sufferers of sleeplessness don’t know how to tackle their sleep problems and resort to sleeping pills to help them sleep at night.

This is understandable, however in many cases sleeping pills fail to tackle the cause of insomnia. Rather they only tackle the symptoms. Sleep aids shouldn’t be relied on for this reason. Because if a sleep problem cannot be corrected, the sufferer may become dependent on sleep aids to sleep at night.

If you are considering taking sleeping pills or sleep aids, talk to your doctor about the potential negative effects. Sleeping pills can be addictive and cause many unwanted side effects. Often sufferers aren’t warned about the side effects, so it’s important to ask your doctor.

A good idea is to consider other healthier options to tackle your sleeplessness. Try and get to the source of your insomnia. Look at how you can improve your current lifestyle and emotional health. Follow a healthy routine; keep a regular wake and sleep cycle, eat at regular times, exercise in the day and engage in relaxing practices before sleep at night.

Try drug-free remedies to help you sleep at night. There are lots of relaxing and calming teas available which are caffeine free. Try a natural sleep aid such as valerian. In most cases it takes far more than just taking a sleep aid to sleep at night. So don’t feel disappointed if you can’t sleep. There are plenty of alternatives that you can try.
