Herbal Sleep Supplements

It used to be that people didn’t mind popping a pill to feel better. But, with the emergence of natural supplements made from herbs and other organic ingredients, prescription drugs have taken a back seat. A reason for this is the possibility of becoming drug dependency..

People are also becoming wary of pharmaceuticals because of all the chemicals and unknown side effects and are turning to the nutraceutical industry for help because natural ingredients are used. For insomnia, there are some herbal supplements that can help improve your ability to sleep in a natural way. Here are some of the common herbs that are used for this purpose:

Valerian- This is a stinky herb, but it didn’t stop ancient Europeans from using it to get a good night’s sleep. The thick roots are dried and ground to make an herbal sleep supplement which can be in the form of a capsule or a tea.

The sedative properties are said to speed up the process of falling asleep as well as giving an overall relaxed feeling. Unlike prescription sleep aids that may leave you feeling groggy in the morning, studies have shown that valerian root leaves you feeling like you’ve had a luxurious night of snooze. This herb is non-habit forming.

Chamomile- Ah, a nice piping hot cup of chamomile tea is another way to bring on sleep. It is made from the dried flowers of a chamomile plant, which resembles a daisy. Even longer than valerian, this flower has been used as a sedative.

Scientific studies have shown that a pigment is present in the flowers. This chemical is a mild muscle-relaxant that induces sedative effects. Though no human studies have been conducted, there is no danger in taking chamomile as an herbal sleep supplement. A hot fragrant cup of chamomile with a bit of honey is relaxing whether it is a chemical reaction or simply the cozy enjoyment of the process.

Lavender- The smell of lavender is relaxing and is often used in aromatherapy as a result. Massage oils, linen sprays, candles, bath salts- you name it and there is a lavender product made to create a relaxing experience.

The oil is extracted from the flower and used in the making of all these products. The scent is supposed to calm the mind and induce sleep. Placing some essential oils next to the bed and breathing deeply may act as well as a sleep aid.

Catnip – Really? Yes, though there are no official studies, capsules and teas are made from the dried plant and used to induce sleep. In moderate doses, it is safe to use but keep it away from children to avoid consuming too much.

If you are having serious trouble sleeping, it is a good idea to visit your physician before using anything. There may be something more serious going on with your body than just insomnia. Also, always check with your pharmacist or physician before taking herbal sleep supplements to avoid interactions with other drugs you may be taking. While these are all natural ingredients, there is always a risk of side effects so always check with your physician before taking anything.
