9-week-old will only sleep swadled in bouncer May 2000
My baby is a very active 9 week old. She is also a restless and light sleeper who cannot sleep for more than about an hour at a time unless she is swaddled and in her bouncy chair. She has however slept through the night several time for 6 -9 hours if she is swaddled and in her bouncy seat. I am concerned getting her to sleep in crib lying down (we are now putting the bouncy chair IN the crib and that works for her) without being swaddled and out of the bouncy chair. Lisa
Does your daughter spit up a lot? She could have reflux and this causes her discomfort when she is lying down. The incline of the bouncy seat helps. My son had this problem and we did a few things. First we put him on medication for the reflux. We also put a wedge under the head of his crib to prop him up a little. Since we have done this he sleeps great. You can buy a wedge at Baby World on College. Gabrielle I had the same thing with my son, he would sleep upright, but would cry shortly after we put him down flat. Turn out he had mild reflux. Not enough that he was throwing up an making it obvious, but it was burning his throat unless he was upright. THe doc put him on medicine which worked great. We also had him sleep in his carseat for months, which worked great, but ended up giving him neck problems because he slept with his head tilted. (We had to do some easy physical therapy–excersises, positioning–which worked very well and he was fine 6 months later) Sounds like you have the same sort of thing, so I would look into reflux and baby Zantac. Good luck. Ann Our son, who is 13 months, also refused to sleep in his crib when he was a newborn. He would sleep swaddled in his bouncy seat or in his carseat. He began sleeping in his crib at about 4 months. He has slept through the night in his crib since about 5 months. Based upon our experience, I don’t think you should be concerned that at 9 weeks he hasn’t taken to his crib. We too were worried that he never would sleep in his crib. I have a 3 month old son who will not sleep in his crib! I just can’t figure it out. He will fall asleep in my arms or in his swing and I will put him down in the crib and he wakes up 15 minutes later screaming. I have tried to let him cry-but about 20 minutes is all I can take. I have tried to swaddle him and put a postioner around him but nothing works. Once I pick him up he immediately stops crying and then will fall back to sleep in his bouncy chair. He now sleeps in his bouncy chair between me and my husband. He sleeps from 9:30 until 6:00 (with a 12:00 feeding). Do I continue to let him sleep in his chair? Help!!! I would like to get him into his own room. Holly
If your little one is sleeping 8+ hours peacefully with only one nighttime nursing break, I’d count my blessing. My daughter slept in her bouncy seat every night for several weeks when she was 2-3 months old. She had terrible congestion from a respiratory infection so were advised to let her sleep in a more upright position. She eventually got well and grew out of it but I think the gentle rocking motion was very soothing and we were grateful that she was asleep. Sharon We had the same problem, but with the car seat. He would not sleep flat at all. We bought a wedge shaped pillow (meant for the crib, it is a firm one that goes under the crib sheet) and finally were able to get him to sleep in the crib reclined. I have also seen things in catalogs to prop up one end of the crib. Maybe you could try putting the bouncy seat in the crib to get him used to the environment, then get him used to sleeping in the crib reclined in some way, maybe using that as well as the positioner so he feels more cuddled. Good luck! Anon My son would only sleep in the carseat at that age. It’s pretty normal. First, your child is too young for any crying- it-out to work. Four months is a bare minimum for that, often closer to six. When they learn to roll over and get more mobile, they want more room to scramble around and get tired of the bouncy seat. My son transitioned to the crib very easily just before six months. He was suddenly acting unhappy with the carseat, and I just laid him in the crib and that was all it took. I had been putting the carseat in the crib, so it was the same space for him, just more room.

Newborn Baby Sleep Solutions – Tips and Wisdom

As a new mother or father, one of your priorities should be to develop good sleeping habits for your newborn baby. It is important for your baby to learn how to sleep on his or her own. The transition from sleeping with parents to sleeping on their own can be demanding and take some time. Of course, the need for a full night of rest, for the parents, should be adequate motivation to help one’s newborn baby learn how to sleep on their own. In order to instill good sleeping habits in your baby, you have to research and investigate a variety of baby sleep tips and solutions: try as many methods as you can and see which ones work for you and your newborn. Don’t be afraid to trust your parental instincts also.
Most baby sleep methods converge around the concept of determining routines and associations for your child’s naptime and sleep. The sooner your little one starts to relate bedtime with sleep, the more likely he is capable of going to sleep with no problem at all and sleeping through most of the night. A period that is commonly disregarded in forming day and night associations, is the “transition” period, the time between being awake and falling asleep. The following are a list of some transitioning techniques to try:

Sleep. Like the weather, that’s one topic on which everyone has an opinion. How often do you hear friends and family complaining they don’t get enough sleep? Or talking about what a hard time they had falling asleep the night before? Maybe you’re one of those people who has trouble staying asleep, or perhaps you get a full night’s sleep but you just don’t feel refreshed when you get up in the morning. These complaints may signal a treatable sleep disorder or simply reflect not getting enough sleep. Either can cause serious health problems.
You won’t be surprised to learn that a recent CDC study of metropolitan, urban and rural Georgia populations found that many people have trouble staying awake during the day. The real news is that 16 percent of Georgia’s residents experience persistent problems staying awake during the day, but only 10 percent reported having been diagnosed with a sleep disorder.
This study analyzed interview data from almost 7,000 randomly selected adults who participated in the Georgia Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) surveillance study. Because people with CFS may complain of problems sleeping, the study also evaluated sleep.
Trouble Sleeping?
Seemingly more and more Americans are having trouble sleeping. This pattern is on the increase. Insomnia can start out with a couple of nights of tossing and turning to a point where you cannot sleep through the night without waking up. I personally have had times when I will lay awake in the middle of the night for an hour or more. During that time I find myself thinking about a lot of things. I often ask myself why I cannot think about all these issues or go through this in-depth analysis during the daylight hours. Another trouble I have is getting to sleep. The obvious challenge to all this is when during the day you lack energy and feel sluggish and inattentive. Sometime I just want to go to bed. Now what is one to do? Why is this happening? We are going to have to look at a number of things.
Repeated loss of sleep can lead to all sorts of problems. Problems such as lack of productivity, emotional problems, problems in relationship, personality changes, mental fatigue, and physical signs of weariness. Not only that, it can lead to severe anxiety. The objective of this article is to share some techniques that you can use to get a good nights sleep. To begin you are going to keep a diary of all the actions you take and the results if any you achieve.
Establish a bedtime routine. Consistency is key here.

Beggars in Spain is a 1993 science fiction novel by Nancy Kress.
It was originally published as a novella in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine and as a limited edition paperback by Axolotl Press in 1991. Kress expanded it, adding three new volumes and eventually two sequels, Beggars and Choosers and Beggars Ride. It is held to be an important work, and is often hailed for its predictions of emerging technologies and society.[citation needed]
Sleeping problems during pregnancy
The majority of first time moms are surprised that they battle to sleep when they are pregnant. We are under the impression that fatigue and, in many cases, extreme exhaustion will only afflict us once our babies are born and are demanding midnight feeds. This is not the case, as so often many moms cannot sleep from as early on as the first trimester. The reasons vary from mom to mom, and stage to stage of your pregnancy, but below are a number of reasons why you may be finding a peaceful nights rest and almost impossible to achieve dreams.
In your first trimester, your breasts may be sore and this is caused by surges in your progesterone levels as well as water retention. To relieve this try sleeping in a jogging top or light bra. Remember your hormones are also raging at this time so try exercising lightly (but not two to three hours before bed time as this may over-stimulate you), cut out as much caffeine as possible, and drink a glass of warm milk before bed as this will calm your hormones and allow better sleep patterns.
I found the most debilitating aspect of pregnancy was morning sickness. This occurred for me round the clock and did not limit itself to 6am calls. To avoid feeling queasy keep some plain biscuits next to the bed and eat them before you get out of bed in the morning, the aim is to eliminate an empty tummy. Try having a light snack before bedtime as well, but make sure it is fairly bland. If you are finding an increasing need to visit the bathroom in the middle it is because your growing uterus is placing pressure on your bladder, so try and cut out liquids for one to two hours before bed time.
