With some major exceptions, sleep is a lot like sex. It’s something you really look forward to, and it makes you feel great when you’re done. Most important, though, sleep is more like your boss — it’s much more agreeable when it goes uninterrupted.
Are You Having Trouble Sleeping at Night?
If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, it may be due to a number of reasons. Sleeplessness can be triggered by one or several causes. These can include emotional problems, excessive stimulants, environment factors, health problems, and sleep hygiene.
Environmental factors such as noise, light and temperature can give you trouble sleeping. If you live in a noisy street it can be hard to block out the noise. Try sleeping in a different room or use ear plugs to get to sleep. Make sure you’re room is dark and it’s not to hot of cold.
Insomnia can be caused by physical or mental health problems. In these cases, the actual health problem needs to be treated. These include hyperthyroidism, ulcers, asthma, arthritis and heartburn. It’s important to seek professional help and treat your health problem. Often when the cause of sleeplessness is treated, sleep resumes to normal.

How baby sleeps in the early weeks
When a newborn falls asleep, she immediately goes into deep sleep (also known as REM sleep, but I will avoid too much technical talk because that’s one reason I made this website, so you won’t have to learn the whole history of sleep if you don’t want to (or can’t stay awake to!)). Newborns spend a lot of their time in deep sleep, which is why it is hard to wake them up (even to eat!) in those early days.
Newborn Sleep Patterns
During those first few weeks of life, newborn babies sleep a lot. Unfortunately, they don’t necessarily sleep when we want them to. Sleep deprivation is a common complaint of parents, especially those of newborns. A common question of new parents is “when will my baby sleep through the night?” According to pediatrician Dr. Peter Strachn, “the average baby will sleep through the night at 6 or 7 weeks of age, however, there are many exceptions. Some babies may not sleep through until they are 3 or 4 months and other may manage at 2 or 3 weeks.”
The reason your baby is having trouble sleeping through the night isn’t because he or she is a night owl, rather it’s because babies simply don’t know the difference between day and night. But there are things you can do to help teach your baby that night time is sleep time. Sleep specialist Dr. Shelley Weiss recommends that at night time when a mother is feeding a baby she should make it a quiet, unstimulating and short feeding period and then put the child back to bed in a dark place. “In the daytime,” says Dr. Weiss “when she’s feeding the baby she should make it a more fun, nurturing awake time to try to give the child the clue that at night you go back to sleep and that during the day it’s okay to be up.”

FLUSHING, NEW YORK—After dozing off between innings in front of more than 41,000 cheering fans Monday night, an exhausted Mr. Met informed team officials that he has not slept since the Mets moved from Shea Stadium to Citi Field.
According to Mets GM Omar Minaya, Mr. Met entered his office and used a series of pantomimes to indicate that his sleep disorder is caused by brighter stadium lights, uncomfortable temperatures, and Darryl Strawberry’s snoring. Minaya, who spent two hours meeting with the 47-year-old mascot, said Mr. Met conveyed the degree of his fatigue by holding his hands several feet apart.
“Obviously, Mr. Met is integral to this organization, and we are quite concerned with his well-being” said Minaya, adding that the Mets are committed to making the longest-serving member of their team comfortable. “After assuring him that the late-night noises he heard were most likely concrete settling, I promised we would get animal control to remove Darryl.”

I’ve never heard of such a messed-up sleep routine in my life! You must be ready to collapse!
So, here’s what I’d do. We had the same sleep routine for all three of our kids, and it works like a charm if you are consistent. Being consistent is the key!
10 Tips for Getting Good Sleep
There’s a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep — and it’s very important. We quickly adjust to being sleep-deprived, and don’t notice that we aren’t functioning at a normal level, but lack of sleep really affects us. If you’re feeling blue or listless, try going to sleep thirty minutes earlier for a week. It can really help.

A. Sleep medication is appropriate in certain situations, and many of the newer medications have fewer side effects. If you’re currently taking sleep medications, I’d suggest talking with your doctor about whether natural sleep aids might be a good option for you.
There are plenty of natural alternatives that may help people fall asleep and stay asleep. The ones that don’t involve taking a herb or supplement can often be combined with medication.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of short-term psychotherapy that involves modifying sleep habits and behavoirs, such as:
- using your bed and bedroom only for sleep
- going to bed and waking up at the same time every day
- avoiding napping during the day
- getting out of bed if you’re having trouble falling asleep for longer than 15 minutes
- avoiding caffeine during the day
- minimizing light and noise in the bedroom
CBT is one of the better-researched natural sleep aids. For example, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association randomized 75 subjects to CBT, progressive muscle relaxation, or placebo. After 6 weeks, the number of nightly awakenings and time to get back to sleep had been reduced by almost 50 percent in the CBT group, compared to 16 percent in the progressive muscle relaxation group and 12 percent in the placebo group.National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists
