Baby Sleep Safety – Reducing the Risk of SIDS
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is the largest known cause of death in children under the age of one. This terrifying syndrome occurs while the baby is sleeping. To date there is no known cure, or reason for that matter, as to why some children are affected while others aren’t. But the simple fact is that over 2,500 babies die in the US each year from SIDS. Although the number of deaths have been lowered by around 40% by taking several preventative approaches and incorporating baby sleep safety methods to safe guard children from SIDS, there is no known way to fully avoid the occurrence of SIDS.

7 Ways to Combat Kids’ Sleep Problems
7 Ways to Combat Kids’ Sleep Problems
Your toddler wakes up several times a night, calling for “Mommy.” Your 6-year-old simply refuses to go to bed. Catering to both, you and your spouse are in and out of bed all night – and perpetually exhausted.
Not surprisingly, parents are twice as likely to say they sleep less than six hours a night if they have a child who ranks at the bottom for shuteye. And the consequences can be serious. Sleep affects mood, the immune system, and the ability to learn new skills. A restless child can also cause stress on a marriage or relationship. Bottom line: Finding a sleep solution is important for your family’s health and happiness. Here are some tips to make sure everyone in your household gets a good night’s rest:

Ferberizing is really all about changing your toddlers’ sleep associations, which, in turn, should solve this toddler sleep issue. “If a mom rocks her toddler to sleep, this is that child’s sleep association, but if the goal is to get the toddler to go sleep by themselves, you need to shift the association to one that she can do herself — the Ferber method is one way to do that,” Cradock says.

Like adults, children have dreams when they are in REM sleep. This occurs 4-5 times each night, and while most dreams aren’t remembered, some are frightening enough to wake the child and make them summon their parents. Nightmares usually begin when a child is about three years old, they are most common between the ages of three and eight (when their fantasy life is more active) and they are most likely to occur later in the night. Unlike night terrors, your child will be wide awake and responsive after the nightmare and she may be able to recall the details of the nightmare the next morning.

Newborn Baby Sleep Solutions
Newborn Baby Sleep Solutions – Tips and Wisdomby Marvin Perry
As a new mother or father, one of your priorities should be to develop good sleeping habits for your newborn baby. It is important for your baby to learn how to sleep on his or her own. The transition from sleeping with parents to sleeping on their own can be demanding and take some time. Of course, the need for a full night of rest, for the parents, should be adequate motivation to help one’s newborn baby learn how to sleep on their own. In order to instill good sleeping habits in your baby, you have to research and investigate a variety of baby sleep tips and solutions: try as many methods as you can and see which ones work for you and your newborn. Don’t be afraid to trust your parental instincts also.
Most baby sleep methods converge around the concept of determining routines and associations for your child’s naptime and sleep. The sooner your little one starts to relate bedtime with sleep, the more likely he is capable of going to sleep with no problem at all and sleeping through most of the night. A period that is commonly disregarded in forming day and night associations, is the “transition” period, the time between being awake and falling asleep. The following are a list of some transitioning techniques to try:
1. “Fathering Down” is good method parents should use in encouraging your baby’s sleep routine. Prior to placing the baby in bed, the father should cradle the baby so that the newborn’s head rests on the father’s neck. The father should then talk gently to the newborn until the child falls asleep. Babies are usually more soothed and calmed by a male’s deeper speech, and can fall asleep more smoothly upon hearing it for some time.

Self Soothing To Help Baby Sleep Through The Night
Self Soothing to Help Baby Sleep Through The Night Self soothing is the key to have baby sleep through the night. But what if putting baby down awake just doesn’t work (and it often doesn’t!)? You may find your baby crying unless you rock or nurse her to sleep. How to get rid of this habit?
Because no one (babies and adults) ever really sleeps through. Our sleep comes in cycles: we go through the different stages of sleep several times a night. In between cycles, there is a moment where we are as good as awake. The skill go settle ourselves helps us go straight back to sleep without waking up completely.
Babies who cannot self soothe yet will wake up completely at that moment, need your attention and possibly cry.
: Know which baby sleep books to buy (and which to avoid)
When my daughter was 2 months old, she slept only 9 hours a day, often only 5 hours at night, and never for more than 3 hours at a stretch. She, my husband, and I were all exhausted. So I decided to consult the experts: I went to my library and, not knowing which baby sleep book to borrow, checked out all of them. My 6-month-old daughter now regularly falls asleep on her own in her crib, sleeps from 7pm-7am at night with one feeding in the middle, and takes 2-3 naps per day. Our family is well-rested, and so much happier!
* 10 month update: We decided to drop the middle-of-the-night feeding at 9 months, again by letting her cry it out, and by the 3rd night she stopped waking up. She has been sleeping 11-12 hours straight at night for over a month now. For my 2nd child I will probably do this earlier.
* 2 year update: Our daughter continues to be a great sleeper — I am so happy that we endured those few nights of crying in order to help her learn how to fall asleep on her own. When we have friends over for dinner parties, they are amazed at how easily she goes down. She typically sleeps from 7:45pm until 7:15am, with a 2-hour nap in the afternoon.
Toddler Sleep Problems: Crying, Snoring, and Sleep Schedules
Tackling Toddler Sleep Problems
Your 1-year-old cries so hard when you put him to bed that he actually throws up. Your 2-year-old still doesn’t sleep through the night. Your 2-and-a-half-year-old shares your bed, or perhaps your 3-year-old wakes in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder.
Sound familiar? If these toddler sleep issues don’t ring true yet, they probably will someday. Such toddler sleep problems are the bane of many a parent’s existence.
