What are a child’s sleep requirements

You can figure out how much sleep your toddler needs based on past experiences. How long did your baby sleep during her first year? It doesn’t increase or decrease much beyond that.

Most toddlers at about one or two years of age will sleep about 12 hours a day. Now, keep in mind that that’s an average and that many children will sleep eight hours a day and many will slumber for about 16 hours. It varies from child to child.

And these 12 hours won’t come all at once. Believe me on this! It’s highly rare for a toddler to sleep more than eight hours at once. Toddlers tend to sleep for as much as eight hours overnight… and then will nap for another two to six hours during the day. Be prepared to adjust your life to their sleep schedule.

Many times if your toddler wakes up at four or five in the morning, you’ll be able to get her to get back to sleep for a few more hours. She’ll see that it’s still dark outside and that means she should be sleeping. That usually does the trick.

So how do you know when your child will fall asleep? The best way to handle this is to get your child on a regular schedule. Go to bed at the same time each night. Make it fairly early for young children. Then during the day, make a nap time in the middle of the day each day. Nap time should be at the same time each day, as well. If you keep on this schedule, your toddler will sleep about the same amount of time for each scheduled sleep. This will give you a good idea how long you have to get important things done around the house (and have some quiet time).
